Important Considerations for Fish Tank Design
Below, we’ll go over some critical factors to consider when choosing a fish tank or when designing one for your home. Fish tanks aren’t just tiny fishbowls sitting on a countertop as they’re often portrayed, and there is a great variety of different styles available on the market today. So if you want to choose and prepare a fish tank that’s right for your home (and the fish that you plan to put inside of it), consider some of the following items before proceeding.
Where are you putting the tank?
This makes a huge difference in your decision. If you plan on keeping the tank in your bedroom on the bed stand, you probably won’t need a very large bowl, though you want one plenty more spacious than you’d typically expect for a single-fish home. If you’ve decided to make the fish tank itself the centerpiece of the living room, dining room, or another area in the house, a more prominent location and a larger tank are probably advisable. Just be sure not to put the tank on anything that doesn’t have a sturdy foundation, or in a place that’s prone to having running kids around all the time (as they tend to run directly into things that can possibly break).
How are you decorating the tank?
Many fish love to hide and dart around through objects, so a boring fish bowl with only water inside of it just isn’t going to cut it. There are so many fake reefs, giant plastic seaweed strands, undersea castles, and more that can be used as major pieces inside the tank. They both add color and flair to the tank’s design as well as providing the fish with plenty of hiding spaces to worm their way through.
How do you intend to clean the tank?
If you’re not the kind of person who likes to maintain something over long periods of time, you may want to consider investing in a tank that’s equipped with a self-cleaning machine. This self-cleaning capacity is a lifesaver for those who can’t spare the time to clean the tank often and well. If you’re around quite often though and have a smaller tank, cleaning it thoroughly on occasion shouldn’t be too difficult to manage, and it can save you money by helping you avoid purchasing a much more expensive fish tank on the market.
